College Mascots without an “S” at the End- Division I FBS

If you are looking for the list of DI FCS and DII colleges without a “s” on the end of their mascot, try here. If you are seeking the list of Canadian college mascots without an “s” at the end (you might be the first), try here.

There are 133 universities that are members of the Division I FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision.) However only 16 of these colleges (12%), share one thing in common – their mascot does not end in an “s”. Of these 16 teams, two of them are Wolfpacks, three of them have green in their name (but not the Irish!), and two of them are types of men – Minutemen or Midshipmen.

The simplest trivia question is to just focus on the Power 4 Football Conferences and ask you to name the 6 colleges in this group of 67 (9%). Four are in the ACC, 1 in the Big 10, and 1 in the SEC (none in the Big XII). A second clue might be that 3 of them are red, 2 are orange, and one is green.

Outside of the 6 colleges in the Big 4 football conferences, there are 10 more colleges in the Division I FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision) without an “S” on the end of their mascot’s name.

Four of these nine are in the American Conference and two are in the Ivy League (thanks to high school friend and Princeton grad, Mark Badros, for reminding me of this). Four have a base color of green (3 of the 4 have green in their name), 3 a base color of blue, and 2 a base color of red (1 has red in its name). The last, the Beach, has a base color, black, not common at the beach.

The weirdest of all is the Golden Hurricane. Unlike the Miami and Carolina Hurricanes, Tulsa’s mascot is only 1 hurricane. But it is also the only golden hurricane in recorded history and it is located in a city, Tulsa, that has never had a hurricane. Story behind the mascot – in 1922, Tulsa was wearing new yellow and black uniforms and playing very well, so well that their coach stated that they were “roaring through the competition.” He wanted a nickname to describe his team but was told that Golden Tornado was periodically used by Georgia Tech so he switched to the Golden Hurricane.
